LOST GARDENS > The Gardens of Khajuraho
The town of Khajuraho lies in the north of the State of Madhya Pradesh. From the 9th to the 12th century, the Chandela dynasty built 84 superb temples here, of which only 25 of them remain. Some are bedecked with erotic scenes that are among the most beautiful the Hindu culture has produced.

In Rajnagar there are some ten royal estates dating from the 18th century, which today lie neglected. A family is still caring for a small portion of the land, but they cannot live on the yield. A number of structural elements have been preserved, including complete walls, a palace building, a temple, wells, and irrigation canals. In the Gardens of Rajnagar, we find distinctive, hybrid forms of so-called Moghul gardens, which flourished mainly in the 15th and 16th centuries. An example of this is the Garden of the Taj Mahal.

The unique social, cultural and economic context of these gardens have been completely lost. The Lost Gardens of Khajuraho project is bringing them back to life within their original context. This is the first time this type of garden has been studied in depth and restored.
