LOST GARDENS > The Gardens of Khajuraho |
INTACH - the driving force behind the project
The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (Intach) was founded in 1984 by Indira Gandhi. Intachs aim is to support local initiatives aimed at the conservation and development of the rich Indian heritage.
Intach plans to restore the Royal Gardens of Khajuraho to their original condition. Once the project is complete, several families will be able to live off the land and the gardens will once again attract visitors to Khajuraho. The restoration work is being carried out by local craftsmen who receive relevant professional training.
The motto adopted by Intach is: "For and by the local people". Nothing is done without the approval of the local inhabitants, and at each stage in the project efforts are made to use local know-how or to give the training needed to do the work.

Geert Robberechts, a dedicated pilgrim to India and a lover of gardens, visited the Gardens of Khajuraho and was immediately impressed by the overall restoration project. He was left with the impression that Intachs approach was "sound, professional and, more importantly, effective".
He contacted Intach India in Delhi to see how he could help. At the start of 2004 the non-profit association Intach Belgium was set up to collect funds for the restoration of the Lost Gardens of Khajuraho. In February 2007, a local Intach Chapter was founded.
