LOST GARDENS > Rajnagar |
Rajnagar (Hindi: abode of the king)
Rajnagar is the administration center of the Khajuraho Region (as a part of the Chhattarpur District in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh). This small town counts some 20.000 inhabitants, and finds its origins around the early 18th cy Fort. For some time it was the capital of this small kingdom, before the royal family moved to Chhattarpur (some 50 km to the North).

The most important families of the region possessed a mansion in Rajnagar, and the royal family founded not less than 13 royal domains (see under “Gardens”). Under the British, the town fell almost into oblivion, and this situation continued in the first years after Independence (1947). In the 1970’s Rajnagar and Khajuraho were merged together in a Special Area Development Authority (SADA), that was demolished afterwards because of a lack of results. Rajnagar is now once again an independent entity with its own Panchyat.
The relative isolation of Rajnagar has resulted in the preservation of many buildings from all past periods, mixed with contemporary, but traditional houses of vernacular architecture.
INTACH Belgium assists to the elaboration of a master plan to develop Rajnagar as a heritage-village, as a contribution to the broader development of the region.
