LOST GARDENS > The Gardens of Khajuraho
The restoration of the gardens
In 1998 the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (Intach) carried out an in-depth study of Khajuraho and the surrounding area and drew up an ambitious renovation plan for the region. The Government of Madhya Pradesh accepted this plan as a guideline for the further development of Khajuraho and the surrounding district.
The gardens are being restored:
  • to introduce organic farming in this region
  • to reflect their former glory
  • to put them on the map within the broader context of sustainable tourism
  • to generate employment
There are few - if any - research projects on this type of garden. Intach will also address this issue. The Lost Gardens of Khajuraho project will be the first in-depth study of this type of garden. However, this project calls for enormous efforts and will take considerable time.
There are few research sources and the information is extremely diffuse. There has never been any scientific research on gardens of this kind. It is time that scientific research is carried out.

In addition, the project aims to achieve a faithful historical reconstruction of the estates and to cultivate the types of vegetables and fruits that were originally grown there. An attempt will also be made to restore the economic link with the temple city of Khajuraho. The produce will be sold to hotels, which cater to the modern "pilgrims" – tourists.

This project is an integral part of efforts to develop sustainable tourism in the region. The gardens are located just a few kilometres from the well-known temples of Khajuraho and beautifully complement the traditional tourist attractions.

The project is based on what has become Intach’s motto: "For and by the local people!"
