Intach - giving India's past a future
India boasts a civilization that - uninterruptedly - spans a period of more than six millennia. The matchless beauty of India's natural environment goes hand in hand with its rich cultural heritage.
The government is already protecting thousands of monuments. However, tens of thousands of these historical sites are still unprotected. Taking up the challenge of responding to the urgent need to protect Indian heritage sites, in 1984 Indira Gandhi founded the non-profit association Intach, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage. Intach was set up with the ambitious aim of protecting and maintaining India's natural and cultural heritage in a modern and socially responsible manner.

Intach India
Intach works locally, with and for the local population. To date, around 150 local Intach branches have been set up. The local branches define their own programmes, but the headquarters in Delhi provides them with guidelines to ensure that every action they undertake is professional. The first foreign branch – Intach UK Trust - was set up in 1987.
